Do I Need a Referral to See a Dentist in Thunder Bay?

· 4 min read · Victoria Dental

Short answer: no. You can book directly. Here is when a referral actually matters, and what to bring to your first appointment.

Unlike most medical specialists, dentists in Ontario do not require a referral from a family doctor. You can pick up the phone or request an appointment online and be seen as a new patient.

When a referral does come into play

  • Complex oral surgery that we refer out to a specialist.
  • Hospital-based treatment under general anaesthetic.
  • Some employer plans ask for a specialist referral before covering specific procedures — check your booklet.

What to bring to your first visit

  • Your insurance card or CDCP / NIHB client number.
  • A list of current medications and medical conditions.
  • Recent X-rays from a previous dentist, if you have them.

Transferring records from another Thunder Bay clinic

Your records belong to you. Ask your previous clinic to send X-rays and chart notes to us, or let our front desk make the request on your behalf when you book.

New patients are always welcome. Browse what we offer, then request a time that suits you — the front desk confirms within one business day.
